IS IT BETTER TO ADOPT A PAIR?
Honestly? YES! It is.
I always tell potential adopters, in the beginning of our discussions, why I so strongly advise against adopting a single kitten in to a home with no other pets. Cats are social creatures and appreciate the company of animal friends. A friend can be a cat or a dog, but there is a huge benefit to your cat's having SOMEONE to cuddle and play with.
Another benefit to having two is that you will worry less when you're not home. You go to work, go away for the weekend, and you're not worried that your little one is bored or lonely. Also, a kitten who grows up with animal friends will be be much more social, and well-adjusted.
A large proportion--maybe even the majority-- of my kittens goes to homes with lonely pets who need friends. Lots of people who adopt one soon realize that it isn't the best idea and go searching for another. They come to TPR since my kittens are well socialized with dogs, cats and people, having grown up with all three.
I get calls from TPR adopters looking for advice on dealing with their now-lonely kittens, and I kinda just have to say, "told ya so."
Here are some pictures of TPR kittens with their new friends, who aren't lonely anymore!! <3
