DOGS (and cats) CAN HELP, TOO!

Dogs (and occasionally a cat) can be great helpers! Lots of dogs have a surprising instinct to nurture kittens and will do some of the dirty work for you. My doggy Coco does most of the heavy cleaning after my babies eat (helps them pee/poo and cleans their faces and toes after a meal). Oogi (you see his tush in the background) cleans cages and dishes, and will do a full-body kitten bath every so often. My cat Piggy helps socialize, clean and cuddle independent kittens once they move out of their boxes. I have so much help from my own pets, in fact, that my kitten-rearing work load is significantly reduced.

I especially appreciate Coco's help, because it's essential that kittens stay clean. When they get crusty from swimming in their food and pooping/peeing on themselves (we're talking serious neglect), they develop infections (both skin and intestinal) which can lead to majorly compromised systems and then death. If Coco doesn't do her job well enough, it's then my responsibility to clean my babies up properly.

If you have pets who will help with cleaning, socializing and cuddling your rescue babies, you're so lucky!! Use that resource (safely, of course--I never leave a nursing/delicate/weak/scared baby unsupervised).
