ALWAYS TALK TO THE PILOT BEFORE TAKEOFF IF THERE IS A PET IN THE HOLD!

These stories, unfortunately, are not uncommon. It happened to me once that, flying from Mexico City to LAX with my dog Paloma, the pilot hadn't pressurized the hold. I was paranoid beyond belief, thank God, and went to the cockpit the second I got on the plane to make sure he knew Paloma was on board. HE DIDN'T. She wouldn't have survived takeoff, and the thought is beyond my worst nightmares. The pilot freaked the f*** out called everyone from ground crew on up. Of course, I freaked out too...but that paranoia saved my dog. On the other end, at LAX, Mexicana (the airline) had zero interest in my complaint and I'm positive they didn't do anything to change their pet safety policies.

Since then, I've told EVERYONE: Go to the cockpit and talk to the pilot PERSONALLY! Make sure everyone and their mothers know there is a pet below!
