HOW TO GET GLUE OFF OF KITTENS ie: STICKY MOUSE TRAPS ARE EVIL!
This morning, I got a call from a TPR member who was alerted to a tiny, 2 week old baby crying under a bush. Someone had seen someone put her there and walk away. He went out to retrieve her, and found her covered in the stickiest glue you could imagine. What is my assumption? That she got stuck in a glue trap, peeled off, and put under a bush "for mom to find". The glue completely covered one side of her body and doesn't dry, which led me to this conclusion.
How did I get it off? With grapeseed oil on cotton balls. Olive and coconut oils would also have worked, as would other cooking oils and even mayo or peanut butter. Then I wiped the oil off well with a dry towel, and she was clean, comfortable, and ready to move on with her life. If there had still been sticky or oily residue, I would have given her a quick bath with dish soap, dried her with a hairdryer, and put her right back on her heating pad. But I avoid getting kittens wet, since it lowers their body temp and is dangerous.
Now, on to the root of the issue: cruelty to animals. Glue traps and other lethal methods of "pest" control (I put pest in quotes because I don't believe in the concept) are cruel. Glue traps are cruel to the target animals, and cruel to the non-target critters like lizards and kittens who get stuck in them and die, too. This tiny baby was shown some half-assed measure of mercy because she is a cat and not a rat. Thankfully, good people came to her aid. But the world could do with a lot less cruelty...stop laying traps!
This is Sticky, the baby I wrote about here. She was ultimately adopted by a veterinary student and has an amazing life!
